Anti-scavenging work is about more than stopping a dog from picking things up. It is about safety, trust, and giving owners back a sense of control and confidence on walks.

Living with a dog who scavenges can be frightening. Many owners walk constantly on edge, watching every step, worried about what their dog might ingest next. In some areas, food is deliberately left out to poison foxes, and dogs can become accidental victims. Bones, cooked food, rubbish, wildlife remains, and unknown substances can all pose serious risks.

Dogs eating the wrong thing can quickly become very unwell, leading to emergency veterinary visits, invasive procedures, and significant financial and emotional stress. For many people, walks stop being enjoyable altogether and instead become something they dread.

This programme is designed to change that.

What's included:

Anti-scavenging training focuses on building impulse control, engagement, and clarity around food and environmental distractions, while supporting dogs to make safer choices without constant micromanagement. Our aim is for your dog to actively avoid food without your direction.

​

This is not about harsh corrections or suppressing behaviour. It is about teaching dogs how to exist safely in a world full of temptation.

What this training supports:

This programme is suitable for dogs who:

• Scavenge food, rubbish, or objects on walks

• Pick up unsafe items such as bones, litter, faeces, or wildlife remains

• Ignore handlers when food is present on the ground

• Become highly aroused or frantic when scavenging

• Have a history of ingesting dangerous items

• Cause anxiety for owners due to constant monitoring

 

Each case is assessed individually, with safety, welfare, and realism at the centre of the plan.

 

Tools included in price:

This programme may involve a combination of:

• Food based reinforcement

• Management strategies

• Corrective tools where appropriate

• Environmental set up

• Clear handling and timing guidance

 

Most training tools and treats used during session 1 are included in the programme price.​ In some cases, specialist equipment may be required. If this is deemed necessary following assessment, this would be discussed fully in advance and is not included in the programme price due to differences in cost.

 

Programme structure:

Package includes 5 hours of training, spread across 4 sessions, and equipment needed.

• Progression, refinement, and long-term strategies

Contact between appointments is expected and encouraged via WhatsApp, using messages, photos, and videos to support progress between sessions.
